I am a girl. There are more important things in life than individual happiness. I don’t even remember anything about her. To ask other readers questions about Sundowners , please sign up. Like her previous books this is a good ‘chick lit’ to read. I know it’s hard to make a bunch of spoiled, rich brats mostly white sympathetic and even remotely interesting, ok?
My most favourite book ever. Dec 13, EmyAttorney rated it it was ok Shelves: It is, I would argue, firmly within the chick-lit genre, and yes, I picked it up at the airport because I had nothing to read and it was going to be a long flight and I liked the cover. May 24, The Cats Mother rated it liked it Shelves: The story continued with Charmaine, who, not sure what to do with her life ran away with her “boyfriend” to Los Angeles, where, unable to make a living, turned into a drug dealer. When I first picked up this book, I thought it was going to be about vampires.
There is no lack of drama, no lack of action, and the subtle, more serious subplot involving racism and imperialism in South Africa is not movle on the no Not just your ordinary, superficial life story of a female character.
Sundowners – Synopsis
This is the first time I read about my home country, Malaysia in an English novel, which is so awesome. She ended up falling in love with Riitho Modise, a black South-African, whose father is a political prisoner. Like her previous books this is a good ‘chick lit’ to read.

Gabby; she was the most realistic and interesting of the bunch. Sundowners by Lesley Lokko Goodreads Author.
So much wasted potential.
Come se non bastasse, il destino gioca a Rianne un brutto tiro, con tanto di nome e cognome: I have to admit, at first I was not drawn in by the book. However, as the novel progresses, and the stories are framed around real historic events South Africa’s end to I have to admit, at first I was shndowners drawn in by the book.
Gabby is the nice fat girl who becomes a successful lawyer, Nathalie the neurotic businesswoman and Charmaine the lazy manipulative cow with no morals who just wants a man to look after her. I love this book, I could read it again and again and I have! To that point, her writing can sometimes seem to rely heavy on fact and statement, while lacking the detail and language devices that would make it a truly, enjoyable lojko.
Not just your ordinary, superficial life story of a female character. Enjoyed how the author was able to capture her readers by flipping back and forth between four different lives of 4 different people and how everyone finally met.
Sometimes as well it felt a bit to coincidental and contrived that the characters kept bumping into the same people from school and their first loves became constants in their life and little things like that lrsley after all this is what fiction is good for.
Fantastic read – wonderfully told story!
The characters are likeable and as there’s 4 girls I found I could relate a little bit to each one. After i read that book I’ve been asking myself for days what were the characters of the book doing in kesley moment, regretting for being such an voracious reader and having already finished that amazing book.
I know it’s hard to make a bunch of spoiled, rich brats mostly white sympathetic and even remotely interesting, ok? It is, I would argue, firmly within the lesleyy genre, and yes, I picked it up at the airport because I had nothing to read and it was going to be a long flight and I liked the cover. As the saying goes, ‘know your enemy’ and so I picked this up and rattled through it.
Mary Okeke Reviews: Sundowners, , Lesley Lokko ***
I’ve just had my eyes operated on and they sting like hell. Gabrielle, intelligent, loyal and always worrying about everyone else. So full of everything.
Thanks for telling us about the problem. The writer, Lesley Lokko is of Ghanaian and Scottish heritage. Secret because Rianne was the nephew and heiress of a rich and important white family in Johannesburg who openly supported apartheid and Riitho is the son of a anti-apartheid political prisoner.
The story continued with Charmaine, who, not sure suncowners to lexley with her life ran away with her “boyfriend” to Los Angeles, where, unable to make a living, turned into a drug dealer. Than again, she got help by her friends, come clean and started over. Rianne deve subire una decisione che non la trova per niente concorde, e parte triste ed insoddisfatta. Finally, Gabby the one who always got her head on her shoulders, finds herself drowning in a tormenting relationship. However, Lesley Lokko’s books are all quite similar: Major fictional companies and fashion lifestyle are talked about or part of the characters lives.
